An Emerging Man / Author update…
When I was a kid, once in awhile my younger brother would tag along with me when I would go runnin’ the woods near our house.
I remember once, when I had gotten to the creek, the water was higher than usual and I had to pick my way along the bank, finding some high spots, I made it out to a tree that I would be able to use to get all the way across the creek on.
My younger brother had lagged behind a bit so I waited… out in the creek… on the tree… balancing just so… and using a low hanging branch from another tree to help keep me from slipping off into the rust colored water.

As my brother approached and hollered, “How do I get over there?” I started to direct him on where I had just been, and what stepping stones I used to get through the brush tangle, along the now flooded creek bank.
Today, as The Emerging Man, standing on the edge of changing seasons here in Wisconsin, as I listen to a cold fall rain hitting my new gutters, I’d like to take a minute to bring you up to date on a few things I’ve experienced and learned from this year… and will continue to learn about as I continue to develop as an Emerging Man and Author.
Being fresh in my mind (as I worked on a bunch of it just today) I’d like to share the topic of “being willing to learn” as we continue on to becoming fully mature men.
We’ve all been at a point where we were the new guy; the untrained guy; or the old guy (me) embarking on an endeavor to try and go from being “unskilled labor” to “creative content creator” specializing as an AUTHOR.
(Creek gets a little wide here)
This years NEW RELEASE: THE JOKER provided me with my first opportunities to ENGAGE with multiple local media outlets.

In my past I’ve had a slight smattering of different; one off; experiences with local newspapers, a local radio station, and the only t.v. I did was being in a commercial for my last place of employment. (Nope… not a speaking part)
But I did have a little experience speaking to groups of people from small gatherings of 10 – 20, to large of anywhere from 100 – 300 people.
So, I had a “little bit” of an idea of how this stuff worked.

BUT… in all those instances I was representing someone else. A past employer; a church; or a little league baseball association… so “the message” I was delivering was not about me… the message I was delivering was “for them” and I’ve found it’s easier to talk about someone else than it is my own work.
Kinda weird.
This summer for THE JOKER’S launch I was able to do a T.V., radio, and newspaper interview.
BUT… I had to boil all of “my stuff” down to soundbite size bits and pieces to “fit in the time allotted.”
It’s harder than it seems… I could have done better.

(I didn’t fall into the creek that day… but I got a little wobbly balancing on that tree)
As I re-watched; re-listened; and re-read my interviews I could see clearly where I was not fully prepared or rehearsed.
My second oldest son, a professional musician, when we work together at weddings, tells me, “Develop your script, and… … stick to the script!”

It’s worked so far and he and I have a good arrangement when we perform a ceremony together.
I could have done better.
The main thing that I’ve learned on my EMERGING MAN journey is… you can’t stay on that log forever… sure… let your little brother catch up… but you still have to make your way across, you still have to keep moving forward… keep learning.
I had to ask for help a couple of times… and with the information provided, and my time availability, I was able to fumble through this learning curve.
I recently (today) downloaded a free e-book “Publicity Action Guide” by Jill C. Lublin @JillLublin.com
Now that I’ve actually been in a radio, t.v. and news station… her tips make more sense to me.
When the opportunities arose this year I looked up other media tip sites… but because I had no real world experience with it… those tips didn’t become clear to me… I didn’t really know where or how to step to get my message across clearly.
I could have done better.
But… now I’ll go back over those interviews some more. I found the below article quite interesting. “Productive Failure”
https://buffer.com/resources/keep-going/
I’ll look hard at boiling down my overall EMERGING MAN message; my books message; and script out and rehearse “my stuff” so that it comes across clear, concise, and sincere.
Stop for a moment today… get a good inhale of those wet fall leaves… and look around and see where you’re at on the trail of being an EMERGING MAN (or woman).
Are you fighting through the brush of life, making your way toward the creek?
Are you at the creeks edge… looking for your next step?
Are you balancing precariously on a slippery rock or fallen log?
Or are you all wet?

I watched the interview, I think you did great for the format offered and developed enough intrigue for interested viewers to follow up! PS nobody ever watched a video of themselves (even professional actors on screen) and thought they did enough.
